In the recent SAP TechED it was announced that ABAP becomes available as programming language and runtime in the SAP Cloud platform.

The platform currently offers JAVA and node.js as development environments for extending existing functionality or built new custom solution offerings.

As of 2018 ABAP will join those ranks and be supported throughout the platform.

The ABAP runtime will be the same as the current used S4/HANA with support for the new RESTful programming model including SAP Fiori and Core Data Services (CDS). SAP Services and APIs are offered according to a new whitelisting approach.

The Eclipse development environment (ADT) will be the only development toolset supported.
