I recently got myself a ‘Raspberry PI’ mini-computer and installed it to play around with some ‘Internet Of Things’ concepts and to get to know this wonderful little device a bit better to understand its capabilities & potential use cases.
As taken from the Wiki: “The Raspberry Pi is a series of credit card-sized single-board computers developed in the UK by the Raspberry Pi Foundation with the intention of promoting the teaching of basic computer science in schools.” This mini computer can support a various number of OS — with the current preferred one being RASPBIAN, a specific Linux distribution — while also Microsoft announced that a specific version of Windows 10, IoT Core, will be made available for free.
A whole bunch of programming languages can be used — ‘Python’ seems to be the ‘default’ language of choice for educational purposes — but also more ‘professional languages’ like ‘C’ and ‘C++’ are available, and even ‘CSharp’ is supported via the open source .NET distribution ‘Mono’.
The Internet Of Things will dramatically change our lives the coming decades and these kind of mini-devices will definitely aid in that change.
