SAP Gateway is positioned by SAP as a light-weight, connectivity component which allows all kind of devices to connect to SAP systems (typically ERP back-ends) to work with ‘data’ using the ‘Open Data Protocol’ (ODATA) without a need for any ABAP programming skills.

The ABAP software add-on has been around for a while and has seen several major service packs so it was about time to get our hands ‘dirty’ and explore this ’new technology’ and its capabilities. In a nutshell: the technology works ‘out-of-the-box’ but is far from ‘mature’ and one certainly needs ABAP skills to tackle anything outside the basic operations.
